Forgot your iPod Touch lockscreen password. Don't just restore in despair-here's what you can do.

It's real easy. So first thing you need is an iPod Touch file Browser.
If you already have one (WinSCP works too) then skip that step.
If not: Click Here

In the file browser navigate to Var (its at the bottom). Then under the var category click Root. Under Root choose Media. Then Right-Click "iTunes_Control" folder and select delete (also just selecting and clicking delete on keyboard works). Next if your firmware 1.1.3 or 1.1.4 go back to Var. Under Var select Mobile. Then choose Media. Then right-click "iTunes_Control" folder and select delete (also just selecting and clicking delete on keyboard works).

After your complete click sleep/wake button at the top and then unplug your iPod Touch from the computer. Plug it in and wait until iTunes start. If you have choice select "Set Up As New iPod" if not just give it a name. REMEMBER: The name you give it must vary from the previously acquired name!

Fix iPod Touch Error

iTunes Error: iTunes Cannot Read the contents of the iPod. Go to the summary tab in iPod preferences and click restore to restore this iPod to factory settings.

Ever recieved this error??? Well you're in Luck...

1.1.3 iPod Touch Jailbreak!

Read this first to escape all errors!
Ok so if you're at 1.1.3 you will need the following to restore:
1. Download this package.
2. Follow the video below, and understand that sometimes things happen.
When ipodtouchmaster says close iTunes, it means quit every iTunes process (Ctrl+Alt+Del and the tab Process [includes iTunesHelper.exe and iPodService.exe])
A: If filecopytophone keeps erroring out as not recognized command, then exit iPhuc and open it again
B: Try entering commands a second time, it could be that your computer is slow in linux.
C: Remember to wait 5 minutes (not 3 or 4) until opening iTunes.

Most Important Issues

Wi-Fi:
When performing the 1.1.3 jailbreak a large part of it requires a powerful Wi-Fi connection. That means you must be close to the source as possible. If you're using your neighbors connection without their information, most likely the network might corrupt. So place contact with close friends or forgotten siblings before doing this.

iTunes:
Apple can sometimes be an extreme pain. To prevent that make sure that you completely remove iTunes 7.6 (instructions found HERE) and then install iTunes 7.5 from FileHippo (found HERE)

Failing Instructions:
Remember to install OktoPrep from Installer before upgrading to 1.1.2 and remember to upgrade, not restore. When installing BSD subsystem on 1.1.2 remember to restart right after your screen jumps to the lock screen by powering down and turning it on again.

Downgrade Errors:
With the downgrade you must remember to type in instructions a second or third time if they don't execute like enterrecovery (which I had to enter twice). If iTunes jumps out during this downgrade just close it until the last step. If filecopytophone keeps erroring out exit iPhuc and open it again, then commence with filecopytophone. Do not execute cmd go if the filecopytophone doesn't show :0 or if you have your speakers on make a clicking sound like when you connect your iPod to the cable.

Installing iPod Touch File Browsers on Mac and Windows

This guide was formidably made to allow people to have full control of the advanced filesystem in the iPod
Touch.

Windows (iPhoneBrowser)
Despite the name this application is very simple, requires no installation, and works when iTunes is on.
Many tests have proven this program to function perfectly.
1. Download This Zip File (it contains the full iPhoneBrowser Package)
2. Extract the folder "IphoneBrowser" to C:\Program Files\
3. Restart your computer
4. When using iPhoneBrowser it is better to exit iTunes but keep all iTunes processes going such as
"iTunesHelper" should be on.

Mac (AFPd and AFP)
First you must install AFPd from Installer.app (manual installation instructions HERE)
Then through that you can manipulate the AFPd program and be able to have full control of your iPod
Touch through Finder in the "Shared" folder. To connect you must use the password alpine for firmware
1.1.1 or later and dottie for 1.1.0 and earlier.

Guide To Adding, and Removing Pics

Some of you may have found that you have no idea where the pictures thrown up from the feature "Roll" come from. So we have made a guide on how to add or transfer any pictures you want to pop up.

1. All pictures accessed from roll have to be placed in /var/root/Media/DCIM/100APPLE
2. All pictures have to be in only capitals and read IMG_0001.JPG
3. The "1" above was selected in red because you can choose to change that number anyway you want depending on what order you want the picture to come out as.
4. To add or remove these photos you don't even have to use iPhoneBrowser or AFP
5. To add or remove photos from Camera Roll you just have to connect your iPod Touch (using the USB cable) to a computer without iTunes and go into "My Computer" and select "Apple Ipod"-That will automatically access the Camera Roll

This is a new and fantastic application. The first native chess application to be released on the iPod Touch.

Controls/Functions:

Load any saved chess game
Save any game at all given moments
Choose from Human, Auto, or a Server Player for both black and white
Choose game difficulty
Marble, or Wooden Board
Advanced/Normal chess piece selection

Issues:

Takes a while for opponent to respond (kind of freezes) if the game difficulty is set really high
Game is buggy at first so you have to change all permissions to 775 in Squid for better function
Sometimes freezes up or just crashes

The iPod Touch Jailbreak

This jailbreak has been tested and proved to work by our Touch experts. We have personally used this jailbreak which works great for firmware 1.1.1 and the new 1.1.2 Please note that the iPod Touch Hacking Team and the iPod Touch Development Team are not accountable for any damage that may occur to the iPod.

Step 1: Downgrade to 1.1.1 (if required)
1. Download the iPod touch 1.1.1 ipsw firmware file from Apple. Do this in Firefox . Click the 'Save file' option.
2. Connect your iPod touch to your PC or Mac.
3. Put your iPod touch into restore mode: - first, turn off the ipod (slide to power off). - second, turn it back on but when the apple logo appears, hold down the home button until it shows the "connect to itunes" picture. Now your ipod is in recovery mode Next, press and hold the Shift key on Windows or the Option key on Mac (In iTunes), then click Restore in iTunes. It will open up the File dialog. Now you can select the 1.1.1 firmware file you downloaded earlier.
Note: Currently Itunes versions 7.4 and up will install ipod touch operation software 1.1.1
Very Important: You must use Firefox to complete this operation change to the ipod touch and iphone.

Step 2: Jailbreaking 1.1.1 (if required)
This step can be skipped for phones which are already Jailbroken.
1. Launch Safari on your iPod Touch.
2. Visit http://jailbreakme.com, Scroll down to the bottom, click "Install AppSnapp". Safari will exit and you'll return to your springboard. Slide to unlock, you are now jailbroken and are able to use Installer.app.

UPDATE (1/05/08): Strangely some users have found that using the official "JailbreakMe" method prevented direct USB access through File-Browsers to any of the iPod Touch system files which puts you in a position to only install and remove apps...so if those applications don't give you the modifications you want you will not be able to change any iPod Touch system files. If this doesn't work with you please visit HERE for our solution to all issues with the official JailBreakMe method.

Step 2 (REVISITED):
Our experts at the iTouch Hacking Team have found that the "Step 2" above doesn't work on all iPod Touch's (this is due to the type of Wi-Fi connection you use-Mostly with WEP blocking connections) and breaks them forcing you to restore. So we have made a 100% reliable jailbreak that has been able to function at all times...unless you mess up a step.
1. Download TouchFree
2. Install it on to your computer (it barely takes up any space)
3. Open it up and carefully follow the onscreen instructions

Step 3: Preparing 1.1.1 for the 1.1.2 update
1. Launch Installer.app (version 3). Click on the Install section at the bottom.
2. Scroll down to All Packages
3. Select OktoPrep
4. Click Install

Step 4: Update to 1.1.2 1.
Connect your device to your computer
2. Launch iTunes
3. Choose your device
4. Click Update. Do NOT click on restore. If you do, everything you have done up until this point will have to be repeated.
5. Wait for your device to update. After the update you will see the screen before jailbreaking -without icon Installer. That's ok.

Step 5: Jailbreaking 1.1.2 1.
Eject your device from iTunes but keep it connected to your computer
2. Close iTunes
3. Download and extract the 1.1.2 Jailbreak Utility. Extract it to /tmp/ if you are using a Mac.
4. On Windows make sure you have Java installed then double click on windows.bat, on a Mac, double click on jailbreak.jar
5. Follow the on screen instructions.
6. Congratulations! You've jailbroken 1.1.2!

Resolutions to JailBreakMe

Note that it is better if you are not good with technology to keep just the official JailBreakMe method on and not do this.

For 1.1.1 users with JailBreakMe method.

As anyone knows that used the jailbreakme.com method that the iPod will not work with iPhoneBrowser because you will only see the iTunes control folder and not the applications or any other of the folders you need to modify files for.

You must have a wifi connection to use WinSCP...

To repair this you must first install WinSCP and connect to your iPod Touch...

then you can see the filesystem... you must now navigate to the
/System/Library/Lockdown/
folder and copy the services.plist to a safe place for backup....

next delete the services.plist file on the iPod Touch and replace it with THIS ONE

restart the iPod Touch

If problem pertains do this:

you add this to your installer sources area

to add it just click your installer app, click on the sources tab, hit edit, and hit add and input the address... then you should see it in the install tab

A Working Disaster

The worst thing you can do to your iPod Touch is mix these 2 applications together. Why? They will totally crash your iPod Touch into ruins. One of our developers has accidentely tested this ultimate destruction out and here is what there is to say:

If you have "Dock" (also known as Sunburst) installed on your iPod Touch you know it has a screenshot feature. If while you have that application installed you try to install the GUI "Screenshot" application this is what will occur.
1. After installing Screenshot with Dock already installed and you press the "Home" button your screen will begin blinking or going blank and sort of grey. It will also freeze.
2. So when you reboot the Apple startup logo will seem to stay on forever and then two buttons will appear at the buttom (snap, and view).
3. Then with only the Apple startup logo showing on the dark screen everything will begin to blink!
4. When you'll plug the iPod Touch into your computer it will recognize it but your iPod won't stop blinking like crazy.
5. No matter what buttons you'll begin to press the iPod won't go away from that screen.

So do you get the picture now? Luckily after a ferocious battle that lasted an hour our developer was able to fix his iPod Touch without restoring it or damaging any information.
